KL Bird Park

Just ten minutes up the road from the Petronas Twin Towers lies a pocket of rainforest that beats with wings: more than 5,000 of them, representing over 450 avian species. Welcome to KL Bird Park, established in 1991 inside the 60-hectare Lake Gardens (Perdana Botanical Gardens). At 20.9 acres of walk-through aviaries, it is the largest free-flight bird park in Asia—and the easiest wildlife day-trip you can add to a city break.

Four Zones, One Feathery City

The park is divided into four colour-coded zones so you can plan your route and stamina.

Zone 1 & 2 – Free-Flight Paradise

Most visitors start here, and with good reason: the netting is 30 m high—room enough for storks, egrets and parakeets to bank and glide overhead. Paved paths wind through miniature waterfalls, palm groves and feeding stations where rainbow lorikeets land on your shoulder for a sip of nectar. Keep cameras ready; the birds have no cages and zero stage fright.

Zone 3 – Hornbill Park

A separate boardwalk leads you into a dedicated hornbill enclave. Look up for the rhinoceros hornbill—Malaysia’s state bird of Sarawak—whose banana-shaped casque looks like a bright red canoe. Daily keeper talks at 11:30 explain how the park’s successful breeding programme helped move these “farmers of the forest” from vulnerable to stable numbers.

Zone 4 – Miniature Aviaries & Caged Exhibits

Zone 4 is a series of smaller, traditional aviaries that spotlight ground birds and delicate species needing special diets or temperatures. Flamingos pose on one leg, fairy-bluebirds flit through ficus branches, and a row of talking parrots greets you with “Apa khabar?”—Malay for “How are you?”—proving that local hospitality is not limited to humans.

Star Species Checklist

  • Ostriches – the world’s largest bird; feeding times 10:00 & 15:30
  • Rhinoceros Hornbill – Malaysia’s “sky farmer” with a wingspan of 1.5 m
  • Flamingos – Caribbean and Greater flamingos share the same lagoon
  • Yellow-billed Stork – easy to photograph while drying wings in the sun
  • Eclectus Parrot – males neon-green, females cherry-red; a living lesson in sexual dimorphism
  • Indian Blue Peafowl – free roaming; tail display peaks after rain

Free Bird Show – Twice Daily

Amphitheatre seats fill quickly, so arrive ten minutes early. At 12:30 and 15:30 macaws swoop across the audience, a yellow-naped amazon sings “Negaraku,” and a brahminy kite demonstrates fish-hunting dives. The 25-minute presentation is included in your ticket; no reservations needed.
